The Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies invites you to join us for three significant events.

Join us on Thursday, February 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Fireplace Lounge, for the African American Read-In, as we read from the literary works of black authors Langston Hughes, Haki Madhubuti, Gwendolyn Brooks, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Jacqueline Woodson and Maya Angelou, to name a few. RSVP to cabcs@adelphi.edu to read from a book we will provide. Refreshments will be served.

From Friday, February 1, to Friday, April 5, 2019, in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Art Gallery, the Center for African, Black, and Caribbean Studies and the Art Collections and Exhibitions curator and Archives and Special Collections staff will host this year’s Black History Month Art Exhibit. We are pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Coby Kennedy entitled Empire of Mythology, combining original works with African items from the University’s art collection, curated by Jonathan Duffy. Please join us on Sunday, February 24, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., for a reception and gallery talk by Kennedy.

On Wednesday, February 13, at 7:00 p.m., the Center will host the annual John Hope Franklin Distinguished Lecture in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom. Our keynote speaker is Premilla Nadasen, Ph.D., professor of history at Barnard College and author of Welfare Warriors: The Welfare Rights Movement in the United States (Routledge, 2005) and Household Workers Unite: The Untold Story of African American Women Who Built a Movement (Beacon, 2015). Dr. Nadasen is currently president of the National Women’s Studies Association Conference and a 2018–2019 Fulbright Fellow at Oxford-Pembroke. There will be a book signing following the lecture.
